Its Tuesday and you know what that means? Another quick spoiler-free book review.
I am slowly trying to work my way into horror and thriller genre and I heard this was a light way to get into it and I gave it a shot and that book is none other than
My Best Friends Exorcism by Grady Hendrix
Can we just first talk about the cover? This screams retro. The cover looks like an old VHS which is super cool. This novel follows best friends Abby and Gretchen throughout their childhood. Once summer night the girls along with two other friends decide to try acid. While tripping, Gretchen decides to go skinny dipping and jumps into the lake and the friends never see her come back up. Frantic Abby runs to try and find her to eventually find her in a forest a bit freaked out but she said she was alright. After that night, Gretchen was never the same and Abby is determined to know why. She just wants her best friend to feel herself again.
This book was a journey. I loved Abby. Its been a while since I had a book where I found myself cheering for the main character and felt so connected and Abby gave me that. I just wanted her to win and help Gretchen successfully.
All of the things Abby felt (to a certain extent) I felt as a younger girl. Her struggles with friendship and sense of self were written so well and completely relatable. This book is not as creepy as I thought it would be, but the elements that were, I really enjoyed. It’s one you can read at night without needing to keep the light on when you sleep.
Overall I gave this book a solid 4/5 stars. It was so enjoyable and I thought the ending was perfect.
If you are looking to get into something a little creepy, but not complete horror, I would start with a book like this as well!
Until next time,
